The WA Centre for Rural Health (WACRH) has partnered with UWA to sponsor the FIFO Pregnancy Study. This project is the brainchild of PhD Candidate, Lorili Jacobs (Lori), former obstetric ultrasonographer at KEMH and now recipient of a 3 year Australian Postgraduate Award Scholarship. Lorili is supervised by Winthrop Professor Sandra Thompson at WACRH, Professor Angus Cook at the School of Population Health at UWA, and Asst. Prof Kimberley McAuley at the School of Paediatric and Child Health.
This world first research will explore the experience of pregnancy for women whose partners work FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out). Read more about this study
Women from Bunbury, Busselton, Geraldton, Mandurah, Rockingham and Perth will be asked to give their opinions about pregnancy via an online survey or to have a chat with the researcher in an anonymous interview.
FIFO Pregnancy Study has the potential to:
- Give voice to rural women, to identify barriers to antenatal care, discover gaps in health literacy and to inform health planning for FIFO source communities
- Showcase the amazing resilience and coping strategies of rural and urban women. Being a single parent when their FIFO partner is away and maintaining a couple relationship when their partner comes home is surely a special skill.
- Explore the meaning of stress during pregnancy in the context of FIFO pregnancy; and
- Understand the important pregnancy events for FIFO couples
