The ‘Understand your heart and heart disease’ series of videos are available to provide education to Aboriginal peoples and health professionals. They aim to help Aboriginal people by empowering them with the knowledge to better understand how to prevent and manage heart disease.
The videos are based on findings from research undertaken by the WA Centre for Rural Health (WACRH), the University of Western Australia (UWA), the National Heart Foundation and other investigators on the Bettering Aboriginal Heart Health WA (BAHHAWA) project. The video clips have been supported in development by members of the BAHHWA team based upon education programs that Lyn Dimer and Ted Dowling have been delivering effectively to Aboriginal people as part of a Heart Health program at Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service.
The BAHHWA project had a strong focus on developing actions to address the disparities in heart disease that exist for Aboriginal people, including earlier onset of disease and improving health literacy, enabling empowerment to better understand and gives clients choices through knowledge on how to manage their own health needs.
